Domaine Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018
ORGANIC BIODYNAMIC VEGAN
With an unbroken winemaking lineage in Alsace since 1620, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht came by its current name in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind. In the 1960s and 1970s, Leonard was able to expand the winery’s collection of Grands Crus and other high quality vineyards. Since then, one of the hallmarks of every Zind-Humbrecht wine has been its overriding sense of terroir: the taste of the vineyard is always clear and unmistakable.
Zind-Humbrecht is managed by Olivier Humbrecht, one of the world’s only winemakers to attain MW status. His passion for Alsatian wines and Biodynamic farming translates into a portfolio of legendary wines recognisable for their purity, intensity and, above all, their faithful expression of each individual vineyard site.
Roche Calcaire is essentially a “2nd wine” of the famed Clos Windsbuhl, with the same Calcaire (Limestone) subsoil influence but from younger vines and parcels selected out of the Grand Vin.
Clear yellow colour. There is an immediate sense of ripe white fruits (peach, pears) and citrus aromas on the nose, with an almost ‘Riesling like’ character. The palate is refined, elegant and the dry finish adds to the complexity of the wine. Good length, medium power, so drinkable! It really is a very convincing Pinot-Gris and a style we would like to achieve exactly like this every year!- Winemaker’s note.
“Flint, smoke, chalk and cream all appear in brief flashes on the nose of this wine. The palate still holds some residual carbon dioxide but then slowly reveals serene and ripe but bright pear fruit at its core. Freshness takes its cue from a pithy texture and lends shape to this bold but fresh, bone-dry wine. Drink until 2035. .
