Chateau du Hureau Saumur Blanc Sec Argile 2018
Historically Chenin Blanc was the King of the grape varieties planted on the banks of the Loire, but little by little it has been usurped by the Cabernet Franc and more recently the white grape, Sauvignon Blanc. These days those golden grapes of chenin blanc are fast are becoming a rarity in the Saumur Champigny appellation. Chateau du Hureau plan to not let them become forgotten.
Very limited yield, organic culture, harvest in successive sorting.
Our 4 plots of Chenin are conducted with a yield objective between 35 and 45hl per hectare, so as to bring the grapes to a perfect maturity.
“With more than 300 years of winemaking experience, the Vatan family is an institution in the Loire and today it is run by a father and daughter team. With 20 hectares farmed using organic & biodynamic practice in the Saumur area, this is a richly aromatic style with ripe peachy and apricot aromas with a honeyed edge. Full bodied, yet balanced by a pristine acidity, it has a fruity character with delicate white flowers. The finish features layers of flavour that impress.

“Slight butter aromas, then punchy tangy fruit and a long, chewy finish. Plenty of texture – should be a very good food match, and the fruit power is ample too. Deserves a few years to open up.
Drink 2019 – 2026.
